Before: Larry moved to Alameda from Hawaii 49 years ago. He lost his home in the earthquake in 1989 after he wasn’t able to afford the repairs and upgraded retrofitting. He’s been homeless and living in the mission for 26 years. He was living with his son but had a falling out during his addiction to heroin. He loves repairing bikes and is fixing up an old steel frame single speed.
Center Experience: He loves that the shelter lets him direct his own energy and doesn’t pressure him. The structure lets him get services on his own time.
Housing allocation: He’s enrolling in rehab services and also under going surgery for stomach cancer. He hopes to find housing soon because his health is failing and has back problems.
